A loose affiliation of area artists, Indiana for Modern was founded in 2004. Their workshop and showroom are located in the center of tiny Uniondale, Indiana in a beautifully restored Arts & Crafts style building. Originally constructed in the 1920’s as a Kaiser-Fraser Auto Dealership, the rundown building was restored to pristine condition using materials salvaged from a 1960’s era shopping mall scheduled for demolition. The restoration has returned the old auto dealership showroom to an office and showroom combination with a well apponted workshop in the back.

The initial concept of Indiana for Modern was simply to build recreated and enhanced versions of the Arts & Crafts era furniture designed by Edward Wormley and Roger Lee Sprunger of the Dunbar Company. Wormley and Sprunger, along with the predominantly Swiss craftsmen at the long gone Dunbar factory in Berne, Indiana had elevated the manufacture of fine furniture to a near art form. Like Shaker furniture, Dunbar furniture is imbued with its own originality, has a timeless quality, and bridges the gap between Arts and Crafts and Modern furniture styles. This rivival of the styles from the golden years of the Dunbar Company, 1945 to 1965, is continuing but the vision for Indiana for Modern has expanded beyond just furniture re-creation.

The expanded scope still includes the Dunbar inspired furniture and fine art and adds the new custom gazebos based on the architectureal creativity of Rich Hersha. A sample of the “Chapel in the Moonlight” gazebo design has been built and is nestled beside the Uniondale, Indiana showroom and may be visited at any time. A sample of the “Indiana Umbrella” design has also been built and may be seen on the north side of Ossian, Indiana next to the Ossian Furniture building located along Indiana State Rd 1. The "Beach House" Gazebo design has also been built but is located on private property.
