Housed in a beautifully restored Arts and Crafts building originally built in the 1920’s as a Kaiser-Fraser Auto Dealership nestled in the heartland of Indiana (Dunbar Country).

Using salvaged building materials from a demolished shopping mall developed in the 1960’s, we converted  Indiana for Modern’s showplace and workshop into a industrial modern jewel. Our philosophy is very “Green”. We throw nothing away, and buy much of our lumber from area farmers whom have salvaged their century-old barns.

A Celebration of Indiana Craftsmanship.
Twenty First Century Arts & Crafts.

Indiana Modern, founded in 2004 and located in Uniondale, Indiana, is dedicated to reviving the styles of the golden years — from 1945 to 1965 — of the Dunbar Company. A unique moment in the history of American furniture making, when manufactured furniture was elevated to an art form, with beauty usually seen only in handcrafted furniture.

This was the result of two brilliant designers, Edward Wormley and Roger Lee Sprunger, as well as their factory workers, mostly of Swiss descent, who apparently could not resist the urge to take the quality of the craftsmanship to a level that even Wormley and Sprunger had not envisioned. The furniture's extraordinary craftsmanship, while never so intricate as the French furniture of the 18th century, nevertheless calls to mind a simpler, modern-day version of it. Like the French furniture makers, Dunbar employed exotic woods, which they used to fashion complex veneers. While gold and silver gilding were added to French furniture, the Dunbar artists worked in brass, aluminum, and stainless steel. While French furniture tops were marble, Dunbar used American pottery and Tiffany art glass. We believe the Dunbar furniture, while imbued with it's own originality, bridges the gap between Arts and Crafts and Modern. Like Shaker furniture it has a timeless quality.

Indiana for Modern is devoted to re-creating the Dunbar pieces. While not making actual replicas, we have used the originals as our inspiration and have added details that we believe were omitted in the original pieces in order to keep production costs low.

Indiana for Modern furniture is hand-made with state-of-the-art equipment and is hand finished. Although new, the quality of these items promises to elevate them to heirloom status, and they have already developed a loyal body of collectors.
